Polartec® Alpha Direct

Stand-Alone Insulation and Adaptive warmth for an ever-changing trail.

What Is Alpha Direct?

Polartec® Alpha Direct is a high-performance stand alone insulation originally built for the U.S. Special Forces making it perfect for stop-and-go activities — like making big climbs, conquering cold peaks, making miles through dense forest, or layering up in unpredictable weather. It’s breathable, fast drying, and warm without the weight or bulk. That makes it perfect for outdoor enthusiasts who move light, layer smart, and live outside in motion.

Why We Use Alpha Direct at BTT

We chose Alpha Direct because it performs where it matters — in real-world conditions where the weather shifts, sweat builds, and warmth still needs to count. Unlike static insulation (like down or fill), Alpha Direct adapts. It holds warmth when you need it and dumps heat when you don’t. Simple as that.

How Alpha Direct Works

Alpha Direct uses a lofted knit structure — imagine tiny vertical fibers floating above a mesh backing. That construction traps warm air when you need it, but lets air flow freely as you move. It’s a balance of warmth and breathability that reacts to your pace and the environment.

What is Alpha Direct made of?

Alpha Direct is a fully synthetic insulation partially made from recycled polyester fibers, engineered to perform in the toughest conditions. It offers warmth without bulk, dries fast when wet, and holds up to years of trail abuse. Unlike down, it insulates even when damp.

What Makes Alpha Direct Different From Other Insulation?

Most insulation works by trapping heat and hanging onto it — great if you’re sitting still, not so great when you’re sweating up a ridge. Alpha Direct is different. It breathes. It dries fast. It doesn’t need quilting or extra layers to perform. That means fewer layers, less weight, and better comfort over time.

What Does “Active Insulation” Mean?

Active insulation means your gear adjusts on the fly. With Alpha Direct, you don’t need to stop and strip layers the moment your pace changes. It balances warmth and airflow, keeping your body heat in check as you transition between rest and movement.

Is Alpha Direct Good in Wet Conditions?

Absolutely. The fibers are hydrophobic — meaning they resist moisture and dry fast. Whether it’s sweat, fog, or a damp forest morning, Alpha keeps performing without soaking out or feeling soggy.

Can Alpha Direct Be Worn Next to Skin?

Yes, and it’s design with that in mind. Alpha Direct is soft and non-abrasive, so you can wear it over a tee, under a shell, or right against your skin.

Choosing the Right Alpha Direct Weight

Alpha Direct comes in a range of fabric weights, each suited for different conditions. We pick the best one for the job depending on the garment’s purpose and where it’s meant to shine.

60gsm — Lightest and airiest. Ideal for high-output days in mild to warm conditions. Great for moving fast, sweating hard, and layering over a tee or under a shell.

90gsm — The sweet spot. This is the most popular choice for hikers and backpackers — warm enough for cool mornings, breathable enough for big climbs, and light enough to pack without a second thought. A true go-to layer for variable weather.

120gsm — Warmer and more insulating. A solid choice for cold mornings, late fall trips, or anytime you’re moving slower in colder weather.

190gsm — Built for true cold. This is your deep-winter, low-activity weight — great for layering up in below-freezing temps or staying warm at camp. Expect loft, warmth, and excellent breathability.

You won’t see every weight in every piece — we choose based on performance needs and trail-tested experience.

What Kind of Gear Uses Alpha Direct

We use Alpha Direct in our Flagship Rip-Back Hoodies and other gear built for motion - like our SwitchBack Trail Mitts. It’s popular in ultralight gear circles for a reason — it earns its spot in your pack.

How Do I Take Care of Alpha Direct?

Cold wash, mild detergent, no fabric softeners. Tumble low or hang dry. Alpha doesn’t need babying, but following those basics helps keep the loft and breathability strong.

  • Less Impactful:
  • Wear Longer...
  • Wash Less..
  • Hang Dry.
